Kick off your shoes with Qdos Creates at The Civic
Pupils from Heather Garth Primary School in Bolton-on-Dearne have joined forces with Qdos Creates to create a performance inspired by the Vivienne Westwood exhibition at The Civic, Barnsley on Thursday July 8.
The performance is the second part of Moved By Art @The Gallery@, an Arts Council-funded initiative which aims to develop links with local schools, introduce children and their parents to The Civic’s exhibition and performance spaces, and encourage wider participation in the arts.
The group of around 20 boys and girls have taken the exhibition, A Personal Collection of Vivienne Westwood Shoes, which includes more than 80 pairs of the designer’s shoes from a private collection, as their starting point and used their own shoes to come up with an entertaining and imaginative dance theatre performance. Their work has been chronicled by Barnsley-based dance photographer Gavin Joynt to bring alive the excitement of dance theatre and make the most of the exhibition’s visual appeal.
Louise Edwards, Project Manager, Qdos Creates said: “I have really been inspired by the creativity and commitment from the pupils. They have worked together using their own ideas to create a brilliant performance using dance, drama and poetry to explore different types of shoes and how they make you move and feel. We are all looking forward to the performance on Thursday when we can share it with an audience!”
Fergus Justice-Mills, Chief Executive at The Civic, said: "This is the second part of the pilot project funded by Arts Council England, and has proved once again to be an innovative opportunity to engage young people with contemporary visual art. Working collaboratively with Qdos to facilitate a performance responding to the exhibition, A Personal Collection of Vivienne Westwood Shoes, has been extremely positive for the young people involved. As a result, I am sure through their cross-art-form participation, these and other young people in Barnsley will be encouraged to experience more contemporary visual arts here at The Civic."
The performance is at 6.30pm, Thursday July 8, The Assembly Room, The Civic, Hanson Street, Barnsley S70 2HZ.
